The Demise of GTX: NVIDIA Prepares to Cease Sales of the Innovative GeForce GTX 16 Series

There have been rumors circulating in the tech industry that NVIDIA is planning to discontinue sales of the GeForce GTX 16 series graphics cards in the first quarter of 2024. It’s not uncommon for outdated products to be phased out, but this case is unique because the GeForce GTX 16 series is the last to bear the GTX branding. From the GeForce 20 series onwards, NVIDIA has switched to using the RTX branding, which reflects the inclusion of Raytracing features. This move marks the end of an era for the GTX brand, which has been around for over a decade (the GTX name was first used with the GeForce 7800 GTX released in 2005, signifying it as the top-tier card above the GT models).

The GeForce GTX 16 series was introduced in 2019, utilizing the Turing architecture from the 20 series, but with certain features like RT cores and Tensor cores removed to make it more affordable, leaving only the CUDA cores as the primary processing units.

TLDR: NVIDIA is rumored to be discontinuing sales of the GeForce GTX 16 series graphics cards in Q1 2024, ending the era of the GTX branding. This series was introduced in 2019 with a more budget-friendly approach, removing certain features but still utilizing the powerful Turing architecture.
