The Disagreement of Mark Zuckerberg on the Approach to Building an AI Deity: A Single Model Capable of Accomplishing Everything

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, recently sat down for an interview with Kane Sutter from Kallaway Channel, discussing various topics including AI and Meta’s new product development plans.

During the interview, Zuckerberg shared his perspective on AI, emphasizing that AI should not be viewed as a one-size-fits-all solution. He critiqued companies that attempt to create a singular AI product that can do everything, likening it to creating a deity. This approach, according to Zuckerberg, is not what Meta is pursuing, as he believes it may not yield favorable results.

He further discussed why some in the industry opt for creating a “deity-like” AI, attributing it to researchers’ perception of AI as immensely powerful, to the extent of being able to create a single omnipotent AI for the future. However, Zuckerberg argued that this is not the way to create diverse things, comparing it to developing multiple apps on a phone that everyone must use or a single content creator in a world that generates content for everyone to consume, which is not the ideal approach.

Zuckerberg emphasized that AI must come in various forms to cater to individual interests and needs, fostering a culture of diverse AI usage. This, he believes, is the way to build a cultural change, rather than enforcing a single mold that dictates uniformity for all.

In the interview, he also touched upon new products in the Metaverse realm, mentioning three potential formats: (1) screenless wearable devices with functionalities like microphones, speakers, and cameras akin to Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses; (2) headsets covering the entire head, featuring a display like Meta Quest; and (3) holographic display screens. The latter concept opens up possibilities for enhanced capabilities such as brainwave control, hand gestures, and other methods.

When asked whether the Metaverse could eventually replace smartphones, Zuckerberg noted that this transition would not happen overnight. Introducing new technologies to replace existing ones requires a gradual shift in user behavior. At present, smartphones are deeply ingrained in everyday activities, akin to how computers were predominantly used 10-15 years ago. However, Zuckerberg foresees smart glasses as having significant potential in this aspect, as users can carry them along with smartphones seamlessly.

TLDR: Mark Zuckerberg discusses the importance of diverse AI applications and unveils potential Metaverse product formats, emphasizing gradual transitions in technology adoption.
