AMD has unveiled the BenchMark comparing the performance of the NPU chip in Ryzen Mobile 7040/8040 against the rival Intel Core Ultra. The AMD NPU boasts a performance of 16 TOPS according to the specs, while Intel’s NPU achieves 10 TOPS. This time around, AMD has tested the popular Llama 2 and Mistral models to see how they fare.
The BenchMark scores reveal that in terms of tokens per second, AMD’s chips outperform Intel’s by around 14-17%. However, when measuring the time taken to respond to the first token, the Llama 2 case is 71% faster and the Mistral case is 41% quicker.
It is understood that Intel’s NPU has lower specs, with Intel acknowledging this fact. They have stated that their upcoming CPU model, Lunar Lake, will increase to 40 TOPS. Nevertheless, the PC-side NPU market will face competition from Snapdragon X Elite, which boasts a performance of 45 TOPS and is set to be released in the middle of this year.
TLDR: AMD’s NPU in Ryzen Mobile outperforms Intel’s Core Ultra, with higher TOPS performance and faster response time in BenchMark testing. Intel plans to improve their NPU in future CPU models, but will face tough competition from Snapdragon X Elite in the PC-side NPU market.
