The Genesis of ‘Gemini’: Google’s Insight into Naming AI Models

Google introduced its AI model named Gemini last year. Currently, Gemini has become the flagship AI of Google. However, one thing Google has never mentioned is why they chose the name Gemini, which is a constellation of the zodiac representing the sign of Gemini, one of the twelve zodiac signs. This name is used to refer to the company’s AI.

Google stated that the team at DeepMind, the AI research lab that chose this name, must explain why. The original plan was to name this AI project Titan (which would clash with Apple). Titan is the largest moon of Saturn. However, the team wasn’t fond of it. Nevertheless, the initial choice of the name Titan framed the theme of naming in the context of celestial bodies and the universe.

Gemini was chosen for various fitting reasons. The word “Gemini” translates to twins in Latin, reflecting the dual nature of this sign. It is a word that aptly describes the development of this AI, as it started from the collaboration of two key teams developing Google’s AI – DeepMind and Google Brain.

Another reason for choosing the name Gemini comes from NASA’s Project Gemini, which took place from 1961 to 1966. This project was developed to complement the Apollo program in sending humans to the moon. NASA currently uses the name Gemini to test spacecraft docking methods in space.

In conclusion, Google mentioned that there are still ideas for naming new AI models using different star names. However, for now, everyone still prefers to use the name Gemini going forward and may add extensions like Ultra, Pro, and Nano to indicate the model’s size.

TLDR: Google’s AI model named Gemini has become the company’s flagship AI without much explanation on why the name was chosen. The name reflects the dual nature of the development process involving teamwork and collaboration. It also draws inspiration from NASA’s Project Gemini and may see future extensions like Ultra, Pro, and Nano.
