Google is diving back into the world of VR/AR/XR once again (round 368) with Android XR set to debut by the end of 2024. On the hardware front, they have developed a head-worn device in collaboration with Samsung called Project Moohan, set to hit the market later this year.
Apart from the head-worn device, Google also has regular glasses embedded with tiny screens, similar to Meta Orion glasses. Most recently, Shahram Izadi, the head of the Android XR team, showcased it publicly for the first time at the TED Conference in Vancouver. (Image available via Axios link)
The prototype Google glasses resemble regular glasses, connecting wirelessly to smartphones. The highlight is the real-time Gemini translation feature, utilizing the camera on the glasses to scan books, among other functions.
Google is expected to reveal more details about these glasses at the Google I/O event in 2025 next month.
