The Head of AI at Duolingo Expresses Satisfaction with the Utilization of GPT-4; Envisions Wider Implementation in the Future.

In the past year, OpenAI has expanded the availability of its API, and one of the companies that partnered with OpenAI and utilized GPT-4 from the first day of its launch is Duolingo. Duolingo introduced GPT-4 in its Duolingo Max service. Additionally, the original Duolingo platform already incorporated machine learning to adapt lessons based on user learning. Just last month, Blognone had the opportunity to interview Klinton Bicknell, the Head of AI at Duolingo, regarding the use of AI in the Duolingo app.

Bicknell shared that prior to this, they had been using a previous AI model called Birdbrain to customize the difficulty level of lessons for users, as well as to correct grammar and listen to user voices. Eventually, they collaborated with OpenAI for several months before launching Duolingo Max.

After the release of Duolingo Max, Bicknell expressed great satisfaction with GPT-4, as it enables the creation of more effective lessons. However, he acknowledged the need to find a balance between features and reasonable pricing (Duolingo Max is more expensive than regular Super Duolingo). When asked about the usage of other models like Claude or PaLM-2 (as of the interview submission date, Google has not yet launched Gemini), he mentioned that Duolingo is constantly exploring new technologies, but currently, GPT-4 is the most suitable for their application. The company aims to provide users with a reliable experience. When questioned about whether Duolingo will develop its own LLM model, he simply stated that he couldn’t answer that.

Recently, Duolingo made headlines for laying off contract employees due to the increased utilization of AI. However, this interview took place prior to this announcement. Although Blognone only received the response last week.

TLDR: OpenAI’s GPT-4 is now being utilized by Duolingo in their Duolingo Max service. The AI model enhances lesson effectiveness, but Duolingo is careful to strike a balance between features and pricing. Other models are being considered, but currently, GPT-4 remains the most suitable. Duolingo’s commitment to a reliable user experience is evident, and their plans for an LLM model are undisclosed. Recent layoffs at Duolingo are unrelated to the interview.
