Netflix has revealed that the number of subscribers in Japan has exceeded 10 million accounts in the first half of this year. This figure has doubled from four years ago, as the platform has started to increase original content in Japanese, attracting more subscribers.
Kaata Sakamoto, Netflix’s content vice president, mentioned successful works like “Tokyo Swindlers,” “The Queen of Villains,” and the reality show “The Boyfriend” that garnered significant viewership this year. He sees Japan as a unique market where Japanese content is essential.
This information is confirmed by Netflix Japan’s popular series rankings, with only two English-language shows – One Piece and Stranger Things – ranking high.
Adding more original Japanese content on the platform not only benefits Netflix but also allows them to expand this content to other markets. Japanese content is the third most-watched globally in non-English language content, behind Korean and Spanish.
