Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group, also known as JAC Group, has recently launched the Yiwei EV, a small-sized electric car. This car is the world’s first electric vehicle that utilizes sodium-ion batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries have several advantages over lithium-ion batteries. They have lower costs, higher safety levels, slower discharge rates, and better performance in low temperatures. However, they have the drawback of slower charging speeds and lower energy density. Thus, they are more suitable for small electric cars or scooters.

The Yiwei EV’s battery is manufactured by HiNa Battery, using JAC’s unique honeycomb panel technology. This small hatchback car has a range of 252 kilometers per charge, and JAC plans to release a model with a range of over 300 kilometers by the second half of 2024.

Xia Shunli, the chairman of Yiwei, stated in an interview with Chinese media that sodium-ion batteries offer an alternative to the currently used lithium ferrophosphate batteries (LFP). They are a cost-effective battery solution that can help promote widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
