The Rust language project revealed findings from the developer survey for the year 2024, with a total of 7,310 successful respondents, fewer than the 9,710 respondents in 2023 due to shorter survey duration.
The preferred operating system of Rust developers is still Linux at 87.1%, up from the previous year’s 85.4%, while Windows follows at 44.4% and macOS at 29.7%. In terms of development tools, VS Code remains popular at 56.7%, though slightly lower than the previous year, followed by Vi/Vim at 30.2% and JetBrains’ Rust Rover at 16.1%.
In terms of Rust adoption in the workplace, the percentage of respondents using Rust as their main language increased to 38.2% from 33.9% last year. Those indicating serious company adoption of Rust saw a continuous rise to 45.5% from 38.7% in the previous year. The main reasons for organizations choosing Rust for work include bug-free software development at 87.1% and efficiency at 84.5%.
Over half of Rust usage (53.4%) leans towards server-side or backend usage. The main challenges in using Rust include slow compilation as the top issue, followed by not enough bug fixing experiences and high disk usage.
TLDR: The Rust language project’s 2024 developer survey shows a slight decrease in successful respondents compared to the previous year, with Linux as the top OS, VS Code as the preferred IDE, and an increasing trend in Rust adoption in the workplace.
