The Wimbledon Tennis Tournament to Implement Electronic System in Place of All Line Umpires, Including Out Calls and Faults, Starting Next Year

The Lawn Tennis Association of England, the organizers of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, have announced a significant change for the 2025 competition. They will be implementing the Live Electronic Line Calling (Live ELC) system to replace all line judges. This system will be responsible for calling “Out” and “Fault” instead of human judges.

Wimbledon first introduced the Hawk-Eye system for viewing whether a ball is in or out of bounds back in 2007 to provide players with challenges. The Live ELC system was tested in 2024, and the results of the tests convinced the association to use technology to work instead of humans, except for the main chair umpire who will continue to be human.

The president of the association stated that evaluations were conducted in various aspects, concluding that technology is capable enough to replace humans and now is the appropriate time to implement this technology.

TLDR: Wimbledon will be using the Live Electronic Line Calling system to replace all line judges, except for the main chair umpire, starting in 2025. The decision comes after successful tests in 2024 showed that technology can effectively take over the role of calling “Out” and “Fault” during matches.
