AIS has announced that they will be the first to introduce Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be) technology in Thailand, in collaboration with their partner TP-Link, a manufacturer of routers that support Wi-Fi 7. This service will be made available to AIS Fibre customers, although a specific timeline has not been announced yet.
Wi-Fi 7 is a new version of Wi-Fi that has been under development for some time and is expected to be released as a complete specification in 2024. Currently, several chip manufacturers such as Broadcomm and MediaTek have been developing chips that support the Wi-Fi 7 draft specification.
Wi-Fi 7 operates on the 2.4/5/6GHz frequency bands, similar to Wi-Fi 6 (2.4/5GHz), but also incorporates Wi-Fi 6E (6GHz). It increases the bandwidth to 320 MHz, compared to Wi-Fi 6’s maximum of 160 MHz. This is particularly suitable for the relatively unused 6GHz frequency band and helps to increase the data transfer rate to 40 Gbps.
TLDR: AIS is set to become the first to offer Wi-Fi 7 in Thailand, partnering with TP-Link to provide Wi-Fi 7 routers to AIS Fibre customers. Wi-Fi 7, expected to be finalized in 2024, operates on the 2.4/5/6GHz frequency bands and offers increased bandwidth of 320 MHz, enabling data transfer rates of up to 40 Gbps.
