News from Google is buzzing on X that Google Maps is preparing to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This comes after the US government updated information in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which serves as the standard for naming locations on a national and federal level. Google states that this name change is in line with their practice of updating names in Maps after receiving official updates from the government.
President Donald Trump signed the order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America last week, and the Thai Ministry announced on Friday that this gulf is officially known as the Gulf of America. However, the name change will only be visible to users in the United States, while users in Mexico will still see the Gulf of Mexico name unchanged. Users from other countries will see both names on Google Maps.
Furthermore, Google Maps will also rename Denali, the highest mountain peak in North America and traditionally known as Mount McKinley by Alaskans, following the official change by the GNIS.
