Transformation of Terminology: Jira to Replace ‘Issue’ with ‘Work’ – Reflecting a Broader IT Usage Landscape

Atlassian, the owner of the popular Jira issue tracker software, has announced a default change from the word “issue” to “work” to reflect a broader usage beyond bug tracking. Atlassian states that Jira is now widely used across various IT sectors, such as marketing and sales teams, where the term “issue” may not align with the nature of their work, hence the shift to a more versatile term like “work.” However, this change is customizable, allowing IT teams to stick with terms like bugs or issues, while marketing teams may opt for launches or copy.

The term “issue” in menus or general usage will be replaced with “work item.” This alteration is set to commence in early 2025 for Jira Cloud services, while Jira Data Center hosted on organizational servers does not currently have plans to switch terms.

TLDR: Atlassian is updating Jira by changing the default word from “issue” to “work” to better suit its diverse user base, with customization options available for different teams and usage scenarios. The transition is scheduled to begin in early 2025 for Jira Cloud services.
