TSMC has announced the establishment of its second chip manufacturing factory in Japan, located in Kumamoto prefecture. Similar to the first factory, construction is scheduled to begin in late 2024, with a production target set for 2027. Meanwhile, the first factory is set to commence production by 2024.
The company’s subsidiary in Japan, known as Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), has TSMC as the majority shareholder at 86.5%, with Sony, Denso, and Toyota also holding shares at 6%, 5.5%, and 2% respectively.
Once both factories are operational, they will have a combined manufacturing capacity of 100,000 wafers per month. This expansion will create 3,400 high-tech jobs in Japan.
