Unauthorized Use of AI by Company Employees Uncovered in Widespread Survey: Half Report Corporations Continuing Usage Despite Prohibitions

Software AG conducted a survey on 6000 knowledge workers in the company and discovered a relatively high rate of tool usage among employees. It was observed that employees tend to stick to these tools, with concerns arising as they often use unauthorized tools, known as Shadow AI.

Within the surveyed group, 75% of employees are already using AI tools, with over half of them not utilizing company-provided tools. Interestingly, half of this user group admitted to being heavily reliant on these tools, even if the company were to ban them.

The survey revealed that many employees use AI tools because they believe it simplifies tasks, saves time, and boosts productivity. However, a minority may use them out of fear of falling behind in the digital era, while others may simply use them out of curiosity.

A striking finding was that two out of three employees are aware that using external AI tools poses a risk to the organization’s security. Despite this, only 29% bother to read the usage policy.

The report suggests that organizations must prepare for the phenomenon of Shadow AI and find ways to bring these practices into the light for better control.
