The Indian government has announced its success in aiding Indian citizens who were lured to work in call centers in Cambodia. Overall, they were able to assist 250 individuals, with 75 of them rescued in the past three months. However, reports indicate that a total of 5,000 Indian nationals have been deceived into working in call centers, with the potential to swindle up to $60 million USD, or around 2 billion baht, in the last six months.
Those who have been rescued stated that they were promised data entry jobs but were instead forced to work in call centers. These individuals are instructed to create profiles on social media to deceive more people in India, similar to scams encountered by Thai people. For example, they are told to claim there are legal parcels under the victim’s name or pretend to be police officers who will threaten physical harm if targets do not comply.
Victims receiving assistance revealed that the orchestrators are Chinese nationals, with assistance from Malaysian individuals who translate the instructions.
