Unearthing the Generational Shift: Millennials Still Embrace Facebook While Reserving it for Second-Hand Treasures on Marketplace.

Readers of Blognone may have come across articles mentioning that younger generations are not keen on using Facebook, at least not for the past 10 years. A recent special report by The New York Times found that the younger generation may not have entirely quit Facebook but rather have shifted their focus to specific areas within the platform.

One of these areas is Facebook Marketplace, a section that allows users to post items for sale. The service has been available since 2016 and was introduced in Thailand in 2017. One highlight is the ability to search for items being sold near users, filter categories as desired, make offers on products, or even complete transactions via Messenger.

The New York Times interviewed a group of young users in their early 20s, who primarily use Instagram and TikTok, and found that they see Facebook Marketplace as a platform for good-quality second-hand items sold at discounted prices, making it easily accessible. Additionally, users can negotiate meet-ups and payments outside the platform, relying on the long-standing trustworthiness of Facebook’s system.

While some interviewees mentioned encountering deceitful sellers, they still viewed Facebook Marketplace as a better option compared to other platforms like eBay or Craigslist. Overall, it is considered a more reliable space for buying and selling second-hand goods.

TLDR: Despite a shift away from traditional Facebook use, the younger generation is finding value in Facebook Marketplace for buying and selling second-hand items due to its accessibility, quality, and reliability compared to other platforms.
