United States Court Confirms School’s Authority to Deduct Grades of Students Using AI for Homework.

In October, Dale and Jennifer Harris, parents of RNH students at Hingham High School, filed a lawsuit against teachers and school board after RNH received a failing grade in AP U.S. History, potentially jeopardizing college opportunities. The recent ruling by the U.S. District Court denied temporary protection for RNH, stating that evidence showed no rush in decision-making on the school’s part, with punishments being routine and not excessive.

In this case, RNH’s homework was found to be AI-generated, citing non-existent sources, revealing an unsettling trend of Large Language Model misuse. This serves as proof that RNH utilized AI-generated content without proper verification or modification. The teachers used TurnItIn services to initially confirm AI usage in assignments, later discovering that RNH spent only 52 minutes on the task.
