Anthropic, a key competitor of OpenAI, has unveiled the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standardized protocol for extracting data from various sources to power LLM-style artificial intelligence question answering. Whether it’s chat logs within an organization, source code, various databases, or storage files, MCP aims to streamline the data retrieval process.
Today, the process of connecting data from different sources to chat interfaces varies greatly, leading to the need for specialized applications or custom functions to enable LLM to access and answer questions. MCP aims to standardize the data connection process, allowing us to seamlessly add new data sources immediately.
MCP itself defines the JSON-RPC protocol, enabling connection channels through stdio for reading console inputs, and HTTP for opening data to chat interfaces on our own machines, such as Claude Desktop, or potentially as a centralized chat service in the future.
Currently, Claude Desktop supports MCP, with servers supporting Filesystem, GitHub, Google Drive, PostgreSQL, Slack, Memory, Puppeteer for web scraping, Brave Search for internet research, Google Maps, and Fetch for direct web data extraction.
