Unlocking the Potential: DirectML now supports Snapdragon X’s NPU, introducing WebNN for NPU-powered web apps.

Microsoft introduces DirectML as a standard library for AI processing on Windows, compatible with various hardware including CPU, GPU, and NPU. Previously, it supported Intel Core Ultra NPUs. Now, Microsoft announces DirectML support for Snapdragon X Elite’s Hexagon NPU, allowing developers with Arm-based Copilot+ PCs to utilize NPUs through DirectML on Windows 11 24H2, still in the testing phase.

In addition, Microsoft unveils WebNN, a layer that enables web pages and web apps to process AI from onboard chips (leveraging DirectML as well) with compatibility for Intel Core Ultra and Snapdragon X chips. Currently available for testing as a Dev Preview release.
