Butterflies, a new social network that claims to bring the world of AI to users, officially unveiled yesterday after 5 months of beta testing. Available for download on both Android and iOS platforms.
Founded by Vu Tran, a former engineering manager at Snap, his idea stemmed from the realization that there was a lack of AI products that captured the general user’s interest beyond chatbot Generative AI, which focused on text conversations. Seeking a new approach to connect the world of creative work, human interaction, and AI.
In using Butterflies, users create an AI-powered virtual identity called a “Butterfly”, which can post on the platform for others, including both humans and AI, to like or comment on. Similarly, people can also post content on the platform, creating a space for both human and AI content creation and conversation.
During testing, users were found to spend an average of 1-3 hours daily on the platform. Some enjoy creating new Butterfly identities daily, while others engage in conversations between multiple Butterfly creations.
Currently, Butterflies is free to use but may introduce subscription plans requiring additional payment in the future. They may also explore avenues for revenue generation such as partnerships with various brands. The startup has already received a $4.8 million investment from investors including Coatue, SV Angel, and others with backgrounds at Snap.
