Unveiling IBM’s cutting-edge z17 mainframe tailored for AI processing optimization.

IBM has introduced the new IBM z17 mainframe, touted as a frame designed for the AI era encompassing hardware, software, and operating systems.

The IBM z17 features the new Telum II CPU, succeeding the Telum used in z16, supporting AI model runs by more than 50% per day compared to z16. It is designed to handle over 250 AI use cases such as credit risk calculations, chatbot management, image analysis, and more.

The Telum II CPU boasts 8 high-performance cores at 5.5GHz, 36MB, a 40% increase in L2 cache from Telum, with a Data Processing Unit (DPU) to accelerate workload processing and manage data at 24 TOPS, developed by Samsung with 5HPP technology.

IBM has also unveiled the new operating system z/OS 3.2 expected to launch in Q3 2025, supporting hardware accelerators for AI processing on new technology, and the IBM Spyre software suite for PCIe cards in Q4 2025.

The IBM z17 will commence deliveries starting June 18, 2025.
