Apple has officially unveiled iOS 18 at WWDC 24 with a sense of urgency, seemingly prioritizing something more important. The major changes seem to mimic what Android fans have been copying, such as the ability to customize the Home screen by freely moving app icons and adjusting the app icon colors. These changes range from a black background in Dark Mode to adjusting the colors of all app icons in an Android-like manner.
Similar to the Control Center, which now allows for more customization in terms of the arrangement of controls and the addition of pages within the Control Center, as well as direct app command support. Additionally, the ability to customize shortcuts on the lock screen, currently limited to flashlight and camera, can now be changed to other commands.
Another new addition is the Hidden Folder feature, which adds folders to hide apps, requiring authentication through Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode beforehand. Additionally, there is a Game Mode that reduces background app activity to enhance gaming performance, including improved responsiveness to accessories like controllers and AirPods while playing games.
Other updates in iOS 18 include:
– Photos: Revamped app design, filters to not display screenshots
– Messages: Support for RCS, scheduling messages, adding emojis to messages, formatting options (italics, underline, bold text), effects in messages, and support for sending messages via satellite
– Mail: Filters and categorization of email types
– Wallet: Tap to Cash support, enhanced data display such as Venue details
– Maps: Topography display and hiking route directions
– Journal: Support for mood journaling
TLDR: Apple introduces iOS 18 with features such as enhanced customization options, Hidden Folder for app privacy, Game Mode, as well as updates to Photos, Messages, Mail, Wallet, Maps, and Journal apps.
