Unveiling MUSA: Moore Threads introduces CUDA’s rival from JPU China.

Moore Threads is a Chinese-based semiconductor company founded in 2020 by Zhang Jianzhong, a former manager at NVIDIA China. The Moore Threads CPU was first introduced in 2022 under the brand name MTT. Recently, the company has launched the MUSA SDK (MT Unified System Architecture), which can be compared to NVIDIA’s CUDA SDK.

The main function of MUSA is to run AI operations on the MTT CPU using familiar runtimes such as MUSA Runtime and muDNN. Moore Threads has also developed the MUSIFY tool, allowing code written in CUDA to be executed on the MUSA platform.

Although MUSA may not be as widely adopted as CUDA yet, the Chinese government’s increasing focus on self-reliance in computing and information technology may boost the success of Moore Threads and MUSA in the Chinese market. It remains to be seen how much traction Moore Threads and MUSA will gain in the competitive landscape.
