Qualcomm’s annual seminar this time around not only saw the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Elite for smartphones, but also introduced the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite and Snapdragon Ride Elite for the automotive market (when combined with Snapdragon X Elite for PCs, everything is indeed Elite).
Qualcomm has been delving into the automotive chip market for quite some time now, with products like the Snapdragon Ride chip for self-driving cars making its debut in 2020, and the Snapdragon Cockpit for in-car displays beginning development in 2022.
The Snapdragon Ride Elite and Snapdragon Cockpit Elite chips, with the addition of “Elite,” follow in the footsteps of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which utilizes the new Oryon CPU developed by the Nuvia team, replacing the previous Kryo CPU, resulting in a significant performance boost (3 times compared to the original Ride/Cockpit CPU that wasn’t as powerful as the mobile chip).
In addition to the CPU, Qualcomm also brings other components from mobile chips, including a GPU Adreno with 3 times the power, a Hexagon NPU with 12 times the power, support for over 40 car sensors, and compatibility with up to 16 high-resolution displays.
Both chips are set to be delivered in 2025, with confirmed orders from customers like Mercedes-Benz and Li Auto of China.
TLDR: Qualcomm introduces Snapdragon Cockpit Elite and Snapdragon Ride Elite chips for the automotive market, boasting significant performance upgrades with advanced CPU and components sourced from mobile chips. Scheduled for release in 2025 with Mercedes-Benz and Li Auto already on board.
