Samsung has unveiled three new ISOCELL camera sensors, namely JN5, HP9, and GNJ. These sensors are not meant for the main camera on smartphones but serve as secondary cameras for telephoto and ultra-wide shots, providing brief details as follows:
The ISOCELL GNJ is a 50MP sensor with 1µm pixel size, fitting in a 1/1.57-inch form factor. It features Dual Pixel autofocus for quick focusing even in low light conditions. Additionally, it includes zoom-in functionality within the sensor to ensure smooth transitions from other lenses without compromising image quality significantly.
Improvements have been made to reduce light leakage and micro-lens reflection to enhance light collection quality and reduce glare, resulting in more natural-looking images in darker areas. Moreover, the use of a new material called silicon oxide upgrades from polysilicon, reducing various signal interferences. The GNJ consumes 29% less energy in preview mode and 34% less energy while shooting 4K 60fps videos.
The ISOCELL HP9 boasts a 200MP sensor with a size of 1/1.4 inches and 0.56µm pixels, offering a 12% increase in light sensitivity and 10% better autofocus performance compared to the ISOCELL HP3. It can be used as both a main and telephoto camera, adopted as the telephoto camera for the Vivo X100 Ultra.
The HP9 employs high light-sensitive micro-lenses and new materials to efficiently collect light and deliver more accurate RGB color filters, resulting in improved color accuracy and better performance with 4×4 Binning Pixel, even in low light conditions. It also allows for smoother background blurring, simulating reality, and supports 2x, 4x, and up to 12x zoom with a 3x zoom lens pairing.
The ISOCELL JN5 is a 50MP sensor with a size of 1/2.76 inches, utilizing Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (Dual VTG) technology to enhance charge transfers within pixels, reducing signal interference in low light conditions. It features Super Quad Phase Detection for autofocus, dynamic color enhancement, and HDR image capture using Dual Slope Gain (DSG) that expands analog light into two signals before converting them into digital data, widening the color range.
The JN5 includes image processing algorithms via hardware to improve image capture speed and display sample images. Real-time zoom is possible due to its small sensor size, making it suitable for front-facing, telephoto, or ultra-wide cameras.
