Tesla has unveiled the Cybercab, a driverless taxi without a steering wheel or pedals. Resembling a smaller, sleeker version of the Cybertruck, it boasts a more aerodynamic design. They showcased up to 20 prototypes at the “We, Robot” event at Warner Bros. Discovery Studio.
Elon Musk plans to sell the Cybercab for less than $30,000 (around 1 million baht), emphasizing that operating costs for a driverless taxi service would be approximately $0.20 per mile, making it cheaper than traditional transportation systems. Production of the Cybercab is projected to begin around 2026 or early 2027, pending regulatory and safety considerations due to its lack of a steering wheel or pedals.
Musk revealed a dual-sided strategy for driverless taxis: first, Tesla will operate its own fleet, which can be hailed via the Tesla app, and second, they will introduce a model similar to Airbnb or Uber, allowing owners to lease their unused vehicles through the Tesla app for others to use, with Tesla taking a 25% – 30% cut.
Additionally, Musk anticipates deploying Fully Self-Driving (FSD) without human supervision in Texas and California next year with the Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
TLDR: Tesla launches Cybercab, an autonomous taxi, aiming for affordability and efficiency while planning future driverless taxi strategies.
