Competition in AI-powered deep web search tools for research is heating up. Recently, Perplexity introduced a new feature called Deep Research, which works as its name suggests in scouring a variety of websites and writing summaries. Currently, both Google with Gemini 2.0 and OpenAI with ChatGPT offer similar functions.
Perplexity claims its Deep Research outshines competitors by delivering desired results in less than 3 minutes, starting from data search, comprehension, analysis, to report summarization in a ready-to-use format. Testing against other tools using the Humanity’s Last Exam dataset revealed that Perplexity’s Deep Research scored 21.1%, slightly lower than OpenAI’s. However, Perplexity’s Deep Research is accessible to users at a lower cost, offering free access compared to OpenAI’s Pro customers (with plans for expansion in the future).
Perplexity’s Deep Research is available for free with a limited number of queries per day, while Pro customers can use it without restrictions. Initially, users could only access it through the web, with plans for future expansion into an app.
