Rabbit R1, a portable AI assistant device that operates through automation commands on smartphones, recently faced allegations that it is merely a scripted app despite the company’s denial and assertion of its genuine AI functionality.
Most recently, data miner Mishaal Rahman revealed that Rabbit R1’s operations are indeed based on just an Android app. He successfully ran Rabbit R1’s APK file on a Pixel 6a smartphone and found it to function identically. Rahman stated that a “news source” provided the Rabbit R1 APK file which, when installed on a phone, can simulate the hardware functions of Rabbit R1 as if it were a dedicated piece of hardware, similar to a low-resolution small screen smartphone. However, using this app necessitates requesting access to certain hardware rights specially configured by the Rabbit company. Without these configurations, the app cannot access these rights on regular Android smartphones.

Portable AI devices like Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin have been criticized as products designed more for show and investment allure than practical user functionality, with most tasks achievable through smartphones. Users such as YouTube reviewer Dave2D have even mocked Rabbit R1, suggesting modifications like removing side buttons and enlarging the screen to essentially turn it into…just a smartphone (at the 4:38 mark).
TLDR: Despite claims of AI assistance, Rabbit R1 operates as an Android app and has been criticized for prioritizing aesthetics and investor appeal over real user utility.
