Qualcomm has unveiled its flagship chip for this year’s new smartphones, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, marking the transition from Gen 3 to Gen 4 after the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 model. The notable change in the Snapdragon 8 Elite lies in the CPU, shifting from the long-standing Kryo CPU on smartphones to the Oryon CPU, similar to the Snapdragon X on PCs (developed by the Nuvia team, former Apple A Series chip team that Qualcomm acquired in 2021).
This Oryon-based CPU counts as Gen 2 of Oryon, newer than the PC version. Compared to the old Kryo, the CPU performance has seen a significant leap, with Qualcomm’s figures indicating a 45% increase in CPU strength, measuring single-core and multi-core performance enhancements, a maximum CPU clock boost of 4.32GHz, a massive total cache size of 24MB, the largest in the industry, and a 44% improvement in energy efficiency.
In addition to the new CPU, other improvements include the Adreno GPU performance increasing by 40%, a 40% better energy efficiency with a new architecture called “sliced”, which divides the GPU into slices with dedicated memory, an enhanced Hexagon NPU performance by 45%, a 45% improvement in energy efficiency, and an overall 27% energy savings in the SoC.
Gaming capabilities feature support for Unreal Engine 5.3 with Nanite features for processing highly detailed environments, a 35% improvement in Ray Tracing performance, and a manufacturing process of 3 nanometers. The upgrade also includes the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem (previously X75) with a maximum download speed of 10 Gbps.
Smartphone brands announcing the use of Snapdragon 8 Elite include ASUS, Honor, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, RealMe, Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
