Unveiling the ThinkPad T14, T14s, T16 Gen 5: Prioritizing Easy Repair with an Impressive iFixit Score of 9.3/10

Aside from the ThinkBook concept with a transparent display, Lenovo has also introduced the ThinkPad and ThinkBook laptops at MWC 2024, following their unveiling at CES 2024 in January.

The ThinkPad lineup unveiled this time mostly consists of the T series, standard-sized business laptops including:
– ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 with options for Intel Core Ultra vPro or AMD Ryzen 8040, a 14″ high-spec 2.8K OLED 400nit display, and battery options of 39.3Whr or 52.5Whr.
– ThinkPad T14s Gen 5 featuring only the Intel Core Ultra vPro, a 14″ high-spec 2.8K OLED 400nit display.
– ThinkPad T16 Gen 3 also equipped with Intel Core Ultra vPro, a 16″ top-of-the-line 4K OLED display, and battery options of 52.5Whr or 86Whr.

Each sub-model of the laptops boasts a top-end design with a Communications Bar at the top of the screen for a high-resolution 5MP webcam and NPU chip support for enhanced clarity in low light conditions. They also feature noise-cancelling microphones for online meetings, a new Fn/Ctrl key layout on the keyboard for easy accessibility, and an enhanced tactile feel to aid users with disabilities. Additionally, they support dual TrackPoint input for quick navigation.

The cases of ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and T16 Gen 3 have been improved in terms of repairability in collaboration with iFixit. They have designed the batteries without the need for cables, added labels indicating device disassembly points, and provided instructional videos on replacing various parts. As a result, the repairability score of these two laptops has increased to 9.3 out of 10.

Other products launched simultaneously include the ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2, a detachable laptop with a tablet mode resembling the Surface lineup, weighing 0.76kg for the main unit and an additional 0.34kg for the keyboard. It features a 12.3″ WUXGA Low-power IPS 400nits display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, Core Ultra vPro CPU, up to 32GB RAM, up to 1TB storage, an 8MP rear camera, and a 5MP+IR front camera.

Furthermore, the ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 Gen 4 is a foldable laptop that was previously branded under Yoga but has now transitioned to the 2-in-1 category. This switch was made to offer a more cost-effective alternative after the pricey ThinkPad X1 version. The specifications include a 14″ 16:10 aspect ratio display, weighing a total of 1.64kg, equipped with an Intel Core Ultra CPU (non-vPro), a new keyboard with 1.4mm key spacing, a larger touchpad made of Mylar, compatibility with the Magnetic Slim Pen, fingerprint reader, and optional infrared camera.
