Reports have surfaced that TSMC has commenced testing chip production lines utilizing 2-nanometer technology, ahead of schedule from the initial plan to start testing production lines in October this year. The first customer lined up for this new technology is none other than Apple, expected to incorporate the 2-nanometer chips in the iPhone 17 Pro slated for release in 2025.
According to reports, TSMC showcased the production line to Apple as early as December last year. These 2-nanometer chips will be manufactured at TSMC’s facility in Baoshan, with the early start in testing production lines giving TSMC at least a quarter’s head start to address any potential yield rate issues.
It is speculated that in the initial phase, Apple has struck a deal with TSMC to exclusively purchase all of the 2-nanometer chips produced, leaving no production capacity for competitors. This mirrors the strategy employed for the 3-nanometer chips in the past.
