The gaming website IGN had the opportunity to speak with Ingela Garneij, the producer of Minecraft, about the possibility of seeing Minecraft 2 as a sequel. Garneij’s response was, “Do you think we will have an ‘Earth 2’ or something? So, there’s no way we will have Minecraft 2.” Garneij mentioned that Minecraft has been around for 15 years and they intend to continue for at least another 15 years. Therefore, the game’s development team, along with game director Agnes Larsson, must work together to establish the game’s vision and long-term strategy.
Garneij acknowledged that for Minecraft to evolve further, the game’s foundation must be robust enough. The game’s engine is 15 years old and has its limitations compared to newer game engines. For instance, the development of the “Vibrant Visuals” graphics upgrade set takes a considerable amount of time. While the age of the technology is a significant hurdle, the team currently has no plans to overhaul the game engine.

TLDR: Despite discussions on a potential Minecraft 2, producer Ingela Garneij emphasizes the longevity of Minecraft and the need to strengthen its foundation before considering significant changes or sequels.
