Warning: Chrome Extension Users Beware – Legacy Manifest V2 to be Discontinued by End of 2025

Chrome has announced the commencement of shutting down the Manifest V2 extension as previously announced in November 2023, with the original timeline remaining unchanged to kick off the process in June 2024.

As of June 3rd, users of Chrome in the testing versions (Beta, Dev, Canary) still utilizing the old Manifest V2 extensions will see a banner notification when accessing the extension management page. In the coming months, these extensions will be disabled, and users will be redirected to the Chrome Web Store to install new replacement extensions.

After the old extensions are disabled, users will have a grace period to revert back to V2 extensions for a brief period, but ultimately, they will no longer be able to switch back.

By early 2025, the entire transition process is expected to be completed, except for the Chrome Enterprise group able to access through specific policies. In June 2025, the opportunity to use Chrome Enterprise will be discontinued.

The issue of shutting down the Manifest V2 extensions has been a long-awaited move by Google, but faced hurdles along the way, particularly with developers of older extensions, especially the Ad Blocker group, being unprepared. This led to continuous delays from the original planned shutdown in January 2023, ultimately culminating in the transition process concluding in early 2025.

TLDR: Chrome announced the closure of Manifest V2 extension, with a gradual process to transition to new extensions by early 2025.
