Waymo Launches Full-Fledged Services in Austin Through the Uber App

Waymo has announced the launch of its services in Austin, where users must hail a ride through the Uber app exclusively, as outlined in Waymo’s plan from September of last year. However, the ability to choose a Waymo vehicle when requesting a ride in Austin through Uber is not yet available. Users must opt-in to the Waymo vehicle option first, and then select from UberX, Uber Green, Comfort, or Comfort Electric when requesting a ride. If a Waymo vehicle is nearby, it will automatically be dispatched to pick up the user and take them to their destination in autonomous mode. Ordering, unlocking, or directing the vehicle can all be done through the Uber app, similar to the Waymo One app.

Waymo’s integration with Uber’s ride-hailing system covers a 37-square-mile area in Austin, including the space for the annual SXSW conference that kicks off this week.

TLDR: Waymo has partnered with Uber to offer their autonomous vehicle services in Austin, where users can request a Waymo vehicle through the Uber app with certain restrictions. This service covers a significant area in Austin and includes transportation for the upcoming SXSW conference.
