Web Development Invoice Cancelled by CEO After DDoS Attack, Netlify Requests Payment of $3.6 Million

The Reddit user Netlify, known as liubanghoudai24, shared a concerning experience where they received a bill totaling up to $104,000 due to hosting Chinese MP3 files on their static website, which typically receives around 200 visitors per day. However, in the past month, the site was hit by a DDoS attack, leading to a bandwidth consumption of 60.7TB.

The cost of using Netlify amounts to $55 per 100GB, resulting in a total expense exceeding six figures. Despite being targeted by DDoS attacks, liubanghoudai24 reached out to support and was informed that they were still responsible for 20% of the bill. After negotiating, the expenses were reduced by 5%, approximately $5,000.

Following this incident, Mathias Biilmann, the CEO of Netlify, responded on Hacker News stating that the support team had reached out to cancel the bill, and the current policy would not shut down the website even under DDoS attacks, but rather address the billing later. He expressed regret for the initial miscommunication from the support team and mentioned that the company is making adjustments to prevent such billing issues in the future.

liubanghoudai24 mentioned that they have since moved their website to Cloudflare for hosting.

TLDR: Reddit user liubanghoudai24 faced a hefty bill from Netlify due to a DDoS attack but successfully negotiated a reduction and transferred their site to Cloudflare.
