Webpage from Amazon indicates that Fire TV products still use Android 14, but no longer referred to as Fire OS.

News has surfaced that Amazon is developing a new operating system named Vega, separate from Android, and it has already been implemented in the Amazon Echo Show 5 since 2023. Following that, news about the new Fire OS has been silent. Recently, documents from Amazon have been discovered mentioning that the Fire OS still uses Android 14 as its base.

The naming convention of Amazon’s operating system is intriguing. The company has referred to Fire OS with version numbers consistently, until stopping at Fire OS 8 (Android 10) used in the Fire TV Stick 4K in 2023, after which it ceased to be called “Fire OS” and started using the term Android 14 / AOSP 14 instead. This has not been utilized on any devices yet, although a developer webpage has been prepared (expected to be used with new hardware launching on February 26, 2025).

As for Vega, it is presumed that Amazon is not yet ready to fully replace the old Fire OS with it, mainly due to app compatibility on the new platform. It is anticipated that Amazon may utilize Vega on specific devices (such as the smart display Echo Show) for some time, similar to Google’s use of the Fuchsia operating system on devices like the Nest Hub.

TLDR: Amazon is developing a new operating system named Vega, separate from Android, which is expected to be used on specific devices initially alongside the existing Fire OS version based on Android 14.
