WhatsApp Finds Itself Under EU’s Scrutiny for Overshooting User Terms by 45 Million People

WhatsApp, the chat platform by Meta, is the latest service to qualify as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA) of the European Union. This entails having over 45 million users in a region.

Meeting the VLOP criteria of the DSA means WhatsApp will face increased scrutiny and regulation. This includes disclosing privacy management details, overseeing content moderation, faster removal of inappropriate content, and specific user-targeted advertising guidelines.

Currently, Meta services that meet the VLOP criteria include Facebook and Instagram.
