Whispers of a Final Fantasy IX Remake in the Works: Embracing Turn-Based Gameplay, Release Date Still Shrouded in Mystery

Information from Midori, also known as @MbKKssTBhz5, a RPG game rumor mill, reveals that the long-rumored Final Fantasy IX Remake is still in the works and not among the games cancelled under Square Enix’s new policy of canceling small to medium-sized game projects.

Midori provided further details, stating that initially Square Enix had outsourced the development to an external team, but the results were not impressive, leading to a change in the development team similar to Final Fantasy VII Remake. Cyberconnect 2 was originally developing the game before it was handed over to Creative Business Unit I.

Midori added that the FFIX Remake has been in development for quite some time, but there is still no clarity on the game’s scale and release date. However, Midori’s sources believe that Square Enix plans to release the game on multiple platforms, unlike previous titles like XVI or VII Rebirth. The game is expected to have a more extensive scope than Trials of Mana’s remake in 2020, while retaining a similar style in many aspects, with gameplay expected to remain turn-based.

Prior to this, FFIX had been remastered in 2016 with Silicon Studio’s Thai branch contributing as programmers and 3D designers. The remastered version saw various improvements to character models and backgrounds.

TLDR: The Final Fantasy IX Remake is still in development, having undergone a change in development teams and expected to be released on multiple platforms with a similar turn-based gameplay style.
