The Winamp source code on GitHub has been removed following Llama Group, the company that owns Winamp, open sourcing it last month. However, it received heavy criticism for being a heavily restricted open source.
The Winamp code was released under the Winamp Collaborative License (WCL), stating that code modifications can only be made for personal use and cannot be publicly shared unless approved by the main team.
The repercussions of this not-so-open open source resulted in some GitHub users complaining of platform usage violations. Additionally, it was discovered that some parts of the code called the DNAS server (Shoutcast Distributed Network Audio Server), which used to belong to Winamp but no longer does, as well as code from Microsoft and Intel. This could potentially lead to multiple copyright infringements, prompting Llama Group to make the decision to remove the code.
