WP Engine Clashes with Automattic Over Allegations of Preemptive Billing Before Launching Attack

WP Engine responds to Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress, who recently attacked WP Engine, calling it the cancer of the WordPress world, using a cease and desist letter asking him to stop his actions and retract his statements. WP Engine stated that Mark Davies, the CEO of Automattic, threatened Mullenweg prior to his speech at WordCamp, demanding that WP Engine pay Automattic ten million dollars annually for the WordPress trademark licensing fees. In addition to the pre-WordCamp threat, Mullenweg continued to send messages until he took the stage, pressuring WP Engine to agree to pay the fees. WP Engine sent this letter stating that they reserve the right to pursue legal action through other means in the future.

TLDR: WP Engine responds to Mullenweg’s accusations, stating that Automattic demanded a hefty sum for WordPress trademark licensing fees, with the threat of legal action looming.
