The rebranding of Twitter into X by Elon Musk seems to still have room for improvement. Zach Warunek, X’s software engineer, responded to user questions and found that the Direct Message (DM) function seemed to be malfunctioning, stating, “All DM functions will be removed soon.”
This response prompted Nima Owji, a data analytics researcher, to discover that employees and developers at X have begun using a new user-to-user messaging service called XChat. Previously, he had posted a preview of XChat, a chat program that encrypts messages, allows file sharing, automatic message deletion, and other chat app-like features.
As of now, details about the release date of XChat are still unknown, and whether this transition will affect old DM messages or group chats remains uncertain.
TLDR: Twitter rebranding to X by Elon Musk may involve the removal of the DM function, prompting the development of a new messaging service called XChat at X. Release details and the impact on old messages are yet to be revealed.
