Qualcomm has unveiled the first chip in its Snapdragon X Series, called Snapdragon X Elite, specifically designed for PCs. This new processor, named Oryon, boasts higher performance than both the x98 chip (compared to Intel Core i7-13800H) and its rival Arm chip, Apple M2.
Oryon is Qualcomm’s new processor developed by the Nuvia team. It features 12 cores with a frequency of 3.8GHz and can boost up to 4.3GHz for 1-2 cores.
The performance figures of Oryon prove that it competes head-on with the x86 market. It claims to be 60% more powerful than the Core i7-13800H, while being up to 68% more energy-efficient. In comparison to Intel’s U/P series processors, it outperforms them by up to a factor of 2.
During the Snapdragon Summit, Alex Katouzian, senior vp of mobile, compute, and XR, took the stage to share additional details about Oryon. He emphasized, “The performance and efficiency of Snapdragon X Elite is unlike anything the industry has ever seen.”
The Adreno GPU details are limited, only specifying a performance figure of 4.6 TFLOPS, which surpasses Intel’s onboard GPU by double and outperforms the GPU of the Ryzen 9-7940HS by 80%.
The AI capabilities rely on the Hexagon NPU, which boasts a capability of 45 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) and supports running models up to 13B parameters. When combined with all the chip’s power in Snapdragon X Elite (both CPU and GPU), it can achieve 75 TOPS.
Qualcomm has announced that PCs using Snapdragon X Elite will hit the market in mid-2024. At the event, Satya Nadella also took the stage, hinting at the possibility of future Surface devices utilizing this chip.
TLDR: Qualcomm has introduced Snapdragon X Elite, the first chip in its Snapdragon X Series for PCs. The Oryon processor offers superior performance compared to Intel’s Core i7-13800H and Arm’s Apple M2 chip. It boasts 12 cores, a frequency of up to 4.3GHz, and is 60% more powerful and 68% more energy-efficient than its competitors. The Adreno GPU delivers raw power, and the Hexagon NPU provides AI capabilities with 45 TOPS. PCs featuring Snapdragon X Elite will be available in mid-2024, potentially including the Surface lineup.
