Microsoft Intensifies Xbox Domination, Imposing Prohibitions on Unauthorized Accessories

Microsoft’s new policy has caused Xbox console users in some countries to encounter error code 0x82d60002 or “A connected accessory is not authorized” notification when connecting unauthorized accessories to the console. These accessories include counterfeit Xbox controllers or flight stick joysticks.

This change was brought about by a software update in late September 2023 and will take effect on November 12, 2023. The full announcement displayed on the screen will state, “A connected accessory is not authorized. Using unauthorized accessories compromises your gaming experience. For this reason, the unauthorized accessory will be blocked from use on 11/12/2023. For help returning it, check with the store it came from or contact the manufacturer. To see authorized accessories, go to www.xbox.com/accessories. (0x82d60002).”

Microsoft’s policy update has prompted non-partnered accessory brands like Brook to issue a customer alert, acknowledging the problem and reassuring customers that they are actively seeking a solution. According to Windows Central, Microsoft has started allowing official third-party manufacturers to sell wireless controllers, indicating their strategy may be to bring these manufacturers into their system. However, it remains unclear how this new policy will affect older accessories that have been previously used under the old guidelines.

TLDR: Xbox console users in certain countries are encountering an error message regarding unauthorized accessories. Microsoft’s new policy, implemented through a software update in September 2023, will block the use of these accessories starting from November 12, 2023. Non-partnered accessory brands are addressing the issue, while Microsoft is introducing official third-party wireless controllers. The impact on previously used accessories is yet to be clarified.
