NSA Releases Video Commentary by Grace Hopper from 1982 to the Future of Computing

The NSA has released a video lecture by Grace Hopper, a pioneer in the field of modern computers, titled “Future Possibilities: Data, Hardware, Software, and People,” which was delivered to the NSA in 1982.

Hopper discussed various topics, ranging from bugs in the Mark I computer to the significance of chips, computer security being overlooked, and the challenges of database systems at that time when even small computers were very expensive.

Hopper is one of the trailblazers in the new era of computers. She was one of the first programmers of the Mark I computer and co-created the COBOL language still in use today. Hopper’s name is synonymous with the US Navy destroyer, supercomputers, and NVIDIA chips.

The video was recorded on APEX tapes, which even the NSA cannot read anymore, prompting them to seek assistance from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to retrieve the data.
