Yesterday, a fire broke out at Alibaba Cloud Zone C data center in Singapore, impacting a significant number of services. The blaze originated from a lithium battery within the data center.
The firefighting process took 4 hours, from 10:20 to 14:40 Beijing time. Even after the flames were controlled, residual heat prevented the team from accessing the area, and network equipment malfunctioned. Firefighting water also entered the server room, prolonging the recovery process.
Alibaba Cloud stated that systems designed for high availability, such as Redis, MongoDB, and MySQL, can be automatically migrated as intended. However, services operating within a single availability zone, like object storage or various databases in Zone C, were affected.
Due to leaking firefighting water, emergency power had to be cut off in one building. Recovery efforts are underway to restore the systems back to normal operation.
