TDRI, also known as the Thailand Development Research Institute, has released a report on the analysis of the labor market demands and skills sought after by employers. This report was compiled by gathering online job postings from 23 websites in the fourth quarter of 2024, facilitated by the Big Data team.
The job postings were categorized into three groups:
1. Entry-level positions for individuals without experience or recent graduates.
2. Junior positions requiring a minimum of 1-2 years of experience.
3. Positions demanding a minimum of 3 years of experience or more, surpassing the junior level.
The report highlights that professions in computer science, mathematics, architecture, and engineering require specialized skills and knowledge, focusing on experienced individuals. The distribution of job positions based on experience level is approximately as follows:
– Positions not requiring experience: 15-18%
– Positions requiring a minimum of 1-2 years of experience: 36-40%
– Positions requiring a minimum of 3 years of experience: 33-35%
In the field of computer science and mathematics, general skills such as English language proficiency (34.8%), problem-solving abilities (32.8%), and verbal communication skills (22.3%) are highly sought after. Moreover, specific skills like SQL (11.9%), Python (11.4%), and JavaScript (9.1%) are in high demand.
Similarly, in the field of architecture and engineering, general skills including English language proficiency (38.5%), problem-solving abilities (30.2%), and communication skills (19.3%) are crucial. Specific skills like project management (22.9%), electrical engineering (11.2%), and mechanical engineering (11.2%) are particularly emphasized.
While these professions offer promising career paths, there are limited job opportunities for recent graduates. TDRI suggests that this may hinder new entrants from joining the workforce, potentially leading to a lack of experience when applying for jobs.
Additionally, the top 6 professions with the highest number of job postings include computer science and mathematics with 16,022 positions (7.2%) and architecture and engineering with 12,107 positions (5.5%).
To address the gap between recent graduates lacking work experience and employer demands, TDRI recommends that the government promote internship or traineeship programs. By studying international practices and engaging with relevant stakeholders, tailored solutions can be developed to tackle this issue.
Furthermore, the government should encourage educational institutions to enhance hands-on learning through internships or cooperative education programs. This will provide students with practical work experience in their field of study, increasing their job prospects and aiding new graduates in transitioning into the workforce.
TLDR: TDRI’s report sheds light on the labor market demands in Thailand, emphasizing the need for specialized skills in various professions and proposing measures to bridge the gap between job seekers and employer requirements.
