Instantaneous Photo Sharing App BeReal: Unfiltered and Trending in Japan for 2 Years Straight

BeReal, the social app that once gained popularity with its concept of users sharing unedited and random-timed photos, has now shifted its focus. The company decided to sell its business to French game developer Voodoo as its popularity waned.

However, BeReal’s growth continues, particularly in Japan. Aymeric Roffe, CEO of BeReal, revealed that Japan has seen a significant increase in user growth over the past two years, becoming the platform’s second-largest market.

Roffe stated that the current BeReal user base in Japan stands at 4.5 million, with a majority being Gen Z, including approximately 30% of high school students who use BeReal daily to share content with their friends. This data indicates further potential for growth.

The CEO believes that the current trend of storytelling platforms without embellishment presents a unique opportunity for brands to market themselves. With the values of the younger generation in mind, he is confident that BeReal has a bright future ahead in the next decade.
