Release of Fedora 42: Revamped KDE Status on Par with GNOME Version

Last week, Fedora released version 42 which has branched out into various Editions. In total, there are 6 main Editions including Workstation, KDE Plasma Desktop, Cloud, Server, CoreOS, and IoT.

A significant change is that Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop has been elevated to Edition status alongside Fedora Workstation which uses GNOME. This means users can now choose whether to use the main desktop system as KDE Plasma 6.3 or GNOME 48.

Other new features in Fedora 42 include a new installation UI (Anaconda WebUI) that looks like a wizard guiding users through each step, merging /usr/bin and /usr/sbin together (/usr/sbin now symlinked to /usr/bin), images for RISC-V architecture chips released alongside Fedora 42, and Fedora 42 images provided for Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) integration.
