Talen Energy, a power company in the United States, has revealed that they have sold their Cumulus data center located adjacent to their own nuclear power plant to AWS for $650 million. This data center is situated next to the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, which has been operational since 1983 and has a power generation capacity of 2,228 MW. The Cumulus data center construction began in 2021, with the first phase utilizing 48MW of electricity.
AWS plans to further develop this data center with a target maximum power usage of 960MW and has a long-term agreement to purchase electricity from Talen in the future. While AWS has previously announced their goal to use 100% renewable energy by 2025, they have primarily relied on solar and wind energy sources. The purchase of this nuclear power data center raises questions about the future direction of AWS’s energy usage strategies.
